Orthodontics for Adults

Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry that deals with the correction of teeth and jaws. Today, it is recommended that individuals be referred to an orthodontist for the evaluation of maxillofacial development around the age of 6, when their first permanent teeth erupt. Orthodontic treatments are usually performed in childhood and youth. Orthodontic treatments are successfully applied in adulthood for individuals who cannot find the opportunity for treatment at an early age. Irregularities in the teeth in advanced ages, correction of the jaws relative to each other and the face (with the support of orthognathic surgery when necessary) is possible with adult orthodontic treatment. Adults may also need orthodontic treatment for an ideal smile aesthetic, chewing function and healthy oral structure. With the developing technology, both shorter, more comfortable and more aesthetic alternative treatment methods have been developed for adults. In this way, the interest of individuals in orthodontic treatment has increased even at advanced ages. It offers aesthetic orthodontic treatment options with or without wires. Transparent plaques, brackets attached to the inner surfaces of the teeth, or ceramic brackets can be considered as ideal aesthetic alternatives for adults as they are almost invisible. It would be best to decide together with your doctor, considering the ideal treatment method, the condition of the closing disorder, whether the jaw joint is stable or not, considering the current oral and gingival health.

Pediatric orthodontics can be of two types. The first one is preventive and preventive treatment at an early age. The second is the treatment that ensures the proper alignment of the teeth if there is no anomaly in maxillofacial development. It is recommended that children be evaluated by an orthodontist at the age of 6 in order to detect chewing, tooth and jaw problems at an early age and not to miss the age of intervention.

At What Age Should Children Start Orthodontics?

At What Age Should Children Start Orthodontics?

For the treatment of jaw, facial and dental disorders detected at an early age, children may need to start orthodontic treatment without losing time. It is recommended that pediatric patients should be examined by an orthodontic specialist around the age of 6 to check maxillofacial development. If there is any anomaly in terms of maxillofacial development, the position of the jaws relative to each other and to the face can be corrected at an early age with treatment methods called functional treatment (functional maxillofacial orthopedics). If a balanced development is observed in terms of maxillofacial development, orthodontic treatment can be started after the completion of the remaining permanent teeth (excluding wisdom teeth) with annual follow-ups. We usually start orthodontic treatment at the age of 12-13.
