Apical Resection (Root Tip Treatment)
Root tip resection is a treatment in dentistry and is the removal of the part of the root tip of the tooth that is causing pain due to infection. This surgery is performed on people who have had at least one root canal treatment but the pain has not gone away. It is performed to eliminate the constant pain and to ensure that the tooth is preserved for a longer period of time. In some cases, the tooth root is broken as a result of external impact and intervention is required. In these cases, apical resection method is used.
How is Resection Performed?
The resection procedure begins with an examination of the patient’s aching tooth and the surrounding teeth. When it is decided that there is no obstacle to treatment, local anesthesia is applied and waited for a while. The physician opens the upper part of the patient’s tooth enough to expose the tooth and removes the infected or damaged part. The canal is thoroughly cleaned and sealed to prevent future infection. The procedure is usually completed in 30-35 minutes.
Who Can Receive Root End Treatment?
It is applied to people whose pain does not decrease despite having root canal treatment.
It is preferred in the treatment of people whose tooth root is broken due to impact and similar reasons.
Apical resection is used to remove cysts formed in the tooth root or jawbone.
Things to Consider After Resection
Post-resection treatment is important to allow the tooth to heal and prevent infection from recurring. After treatment, rest and ice should be applied to the surgical site at regular intervals. Hot, cold and hard foods should not be consumed. As with other treatments, tobacco products should never be used. It is normal to see swelling and bruising in the area after the application. Painkillers recommended by the physician can be used.
Root tip resection eliminates toothache and makes it possible to use the tooth healthier for a longer period of time. It also prevents the spread of infection and prevents tooth loss. For these reasons, root tip resection is an effective method for the treatment of toothache and tooth root infections.
